– What is your first Christmas memory?
– He must have been four years old and there was a small locomotive under the tree – he smiles Zsolt Baumgartner, He is the only Formula 1 driver in Hungary, who is now the father of three children. “I almost jumped out of my skin with joy, but they said I could sit on it for now and then give it a try when I get better and get a little bigger. Yes, but the neighbor was older than me, we both figured out very well how to start the engine and we learned how to do it.
“Is there a tradition that the Baumgartner family always follows on vacation?”
– The wine soup.
– Not fish soup?
– No, wine soup. I always used to have wine, spices, egg yolks, sugar, maybe cream, but I’m not sure about the latter because my mom always does. And, of course, there will be fish on the table, from the perch I fish during the summer.
– I understand why your young son Gergő brought small plastic fish as bait for the photograph. Big fishermen?
“She likes to sit outside with me on the boardwalk, of course she’s trying toy sticks for now, but she’s very interested in everything she can do with me.”
– It seems. He told me what time of day, with what stick and with what bait it was worth going for the carp and what kind of bream.
“It’s amazing how you absorb the information and how you memorize it.” It is open to all kinds of news, but so is the case of the two girls; They are simply interested in something completely different: Anna loves horses, for example, now it is her greatest desire to be a horse trainer. And he is aware that for this it is not enough to be on top of the horse, but he also needs to know how to treat him, how to clean his hooves while feeding.

– He also liked Christmas photography better.
– It is interesting that my family and I have never been in a photograph of this type before, but it may be that the National Sports creates a tradition, because we had a great time, there were no cramps in it.
“Let’s go back to the old Christmas a little … What is it that flashes from your childhood as a good memory?”
“The smell of pine and the fact that we sing to the angel from heaven, this is a tradition to this day, I cannot imagine the artificial pine, and you cannot lose the song either, since in those few minutes it is quite slow slow down, calm down, stop in those few minutes. in a hurry and it’s just us … It’s the miracle of Christmas. Then of course the kids start running, we go to dinner, and we quickly get back to everything we used to do.
– The party has fundamentally changed with the arrival of the children, Anna, Gergő and Julcsi, right?
“Yes, now their joy is paramount, and since their pace of life is different from that of adults, you must manage your time with great skill; this is a first even after six years and requires patience from everyone on some level.
– Does Jesus bring the gift?
– The Angel. They also write him a letter, my wife Zsófi encourages them. It was also “written” to Santa, and now to the angel – with maternal help, of course.
“Do you remember how long you believed in the angel?”
– My faith faded very slowly. I hesitated several times, there were minor signs, and it could be the first in general when it gradually became clear to me what it was like at Christmas, how my mother “operated” it.
“Have you always wanted to have a lot of children?”
“I don’t have a brother, so I definitely wanted Anna to have one, and since my wife, Sophie, wanted three, she turned three.” They are relatively close to each other in age, and it is getting easier with the little one, but obviously we are on a completely different path than before, when we were only two years old.
– Are the little ones okay?
“Sometimes they fight, but I think that’s normal, and most of the time they get along very well.”
– The end of the year will be special for you not only because of the holidays: you will turn 40 on January 1 …
“You see, I haven’t dealt with this before.” But perhaps not because the party and the good humor are lagging behind for understandable reasons; never mind, we’ll reconcile in the summer or whenever we can.
– How do you live this milestone?
“Obviously, on the one hand, the quartet in my number of years indicates that it really is adulthood, if I had not realized by now that I had more pressure and responsibility in all areas of life.

“However, there was little responsibility in Formula One.” Really, the holidays were in a hurry at the time?
– Absolutely not. There weren’t that many races back then, and even though I tried it in December 2003, it was the middle to mid-month, so I’ve been home for Christmas for a long time. It is much more difficult for current cyclists, the season is going to last a long time, they are going home almost two weeks before the holidays, they are only unloading the quarantine and Christmas is already on their necks.
– Do children already know that their father is the only Formula 1 driver in Hungary?
– Anna has already seen the two-seater live, she was with us at the Hungaroring and Gergő saw videos of him. He’s very enthusiastic anyway, he loves sports cars, he loves to sit in Mégane, he always says: “Dad, let’s go fast!”, And let it be our business, the boys …
“Do you ever say you want a small engine?”
“Thank goodness that’s not a topic yet, but in about three hours I learned to hoverboard, which really surprised me, as not even adults can stop at this structure: you can move forward or backward with the weight transfer, most of them fall off for the first time. Anna and Gergő, on the other hand, have amazing sense.
– I feel like I didn’t want to understand the question directly …
– The small engine – yes. I’ll tell you honestly, I won’t force it until it occurs to you. I have always loved motorcycling and sometimes I still catch the temptation today. You know, I stopped at Formula One because it was forbidden. So I didn’t sit back due to the dangers, but it still brings me a fever to this day because that is why my love of speed is not over. But even if I sit down, I quit after a few hundred meters, because I am still the father of three children.
– Okay, then I’ll ask more forcefully. If Gergő, or Anna or Julcsi, once stood in front of you and said: Dad, I want to be a car racer, what would you answer?
“I’d be happy on the one hand, and I’d probably try to convince you not to.” You know, it’s a pretty bumpy road, I wish they were easier if they could.
– And what would your Christmas wish be?
“For life to return to normal, it is no longer relevant today, and of course to keep our loved ones healthy with us.
