A preliminary hearing was held in the criminal case of András Fekete-Győr.
The prosecution charged the president of Momentum in late September with throwing smoke grenades at police in December 2018 in an organized protest due to the overtime law. He was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison in Fekete-Győr, suspended for three years.
According to the Momentum statement, Fekete-Győr said in court that he understood “the accusation made by Viktor Orbán to the pen,” but did not commit any crime. The politician admitted in the days after the symptom that he had thrown the smoke bomb. According to the prosecution, this impeded the police in their judicial process.
The court scheduled the first regular hearing early next year.
“It seems important to me to reiterate that as a politician and citizen, I take responsibility for everything I do. As I have undertaken so far, I will do so in the future. The accusation of violence against the Orbán Prosecutor’s Office is a ridiculous, pathetic attempt, it would not be absurd only in Russia or Turkey. For almost a day, the Orbán prosecution waited exactly two years to bring me to justice. The Momentum is now one of the strongest opposition parties. And Fidesz is afraid of the new political generation, that is why Viktor Orbán wants to see me handcuffed, ”Fekete-Győr said at the post-preliminary trial press conference.
His lawyer told us in September that Fekete-Győr had not committed any crime, and this was confirmed by the confessor police. According to him, the politician’s behavior was not violent and the prosecution could not prove anything that the fumigator had obstructed anyone, so there is no talk of violence against an official in this case.
The prosecution heard witnesses in the case in early 2019, and then in May became suspicious of Fekete-Győr. Then, in February this year, more police officers were questioned and prosecuted in September, after a total of 21 months.
