The Nagykanizsa District Court convicted a 48-year-old woman who had run over a four-year-old boy and his mother with a zebra two and a half years ago and then gently drove him away without assistance.
The 50-year-old woman was driving in the evening twilight, but with good visibility, in her Mercedes-like car in Nagykanizsa, with two small children in the back seat. Repeatedly the car was not suitable for safe driving: the vehicle’s interior rear view mirror was missing, the rear tires were worn, and the rear wheels could not be braked.
The woman approached the crosswalk at Lake Balaton, slightly exceeding the speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour, and noticed late that a couple was crossing the zebra with their young son. He ran over the mother and her four-year-old son with the car and continued on without stopping.
The boy developed permanent physical disability, central nervous system dysfunction, and limb paralysis as a result of the accident, and his mother suffered multiple limb and skull fractures.
The Nagykanizsa District Court sentenced the woman to one year in prison and banned her from driving for three and a half years for not providing assistance and having committed a traffic accident.
It was evaluated as an aggravating circumstance that the woman had already been sanctioned for a traffic violation, but there was an extenuating reason that she was raising more children and meanwhile her health had deteriorated significantly. In the explanatory memorandum it was stated that the woman also endangered her two minor children sitting in the car with her unsuitable car, and caused the accident by violating traffic regulations several times. According to the expert, the wading could have been avoided with a car in good technical condition and at a slower speed.
The verdict was not final because both the prosecutor and the woman and her lawyer asked for three days to think about a possible appeal.
