17 new coronavirus infections were identified in China on Monday, the second consecutive day of double-digit growth, the BBC writes.
All were infected within the country, not brought from abroad.
On Sunday, authorities classified Shulan, a city of approximately 700,000 people near the Russian-North Korean border, as high-risk after several cases were identified there.
Eleven people in the settlement have been infected in the past 24 hours, presumably all of a 45-year-old woman who worked in a laundry, according to state media.
The woman’s husband, sisters, and several close relatives have also been diagnosed with coronavirus, although she has not traveled or been in contact with an infected person identified in the recent past, so it is still a complete mystery of where she contracted the disease.
According to the decision, all community spaces, sports centers, cinemas and libraries in the city were closed and all residents were urged to stay home. Public transport has been suspended, taxis cannot leave the borders of Shulan.
Meanwhile, five new infections have also been found in Wuhan, the focal point of the epidemic, unprecedented two months ago, on March 11.
This is a warning sign, because although the epidemic is being controlled in more and more places around the world, many fear a second wave, which can develop extremely easily in the absence of adequate precautions.
In China, 82,918 cases have been diagnosed so far since the outbreak began, and 4,633 people have died.
