The highway is a direct connection between Debrecen and Oradea.

– This new connection is a success, a common success. And a good base to build trust and respect. On the basis of this mutual trust and respect, even difficult problems can be resolved and disputes can be closed. I think it will also be successful in the relationship between Hungary and Romania. We are also prepared for this joint work in the future, said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, at the handover ceremony of the 26.5-kilometer section of the M4 motorway between Berettyóújfalu and Nagykereki on Friday.

Bogdan Lucian Aurescu, present at the event, together with his Hungarian counterpart, the Romanian Chancellor and Lucian Nicolae Bode, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communications, announced:

In 2024 the Csenger-Satu Mare highway will be delivered.

Help Nagylak, make getting around easier

The relationship between Hungary and Romania will be strengthened in many areas with the delivery of the M4 section on Friday.

– Here they go to the road, and after about 27 kilometers they arrive at the place of the ceremony – we were also guided by the policeman who controls the concept on the Berettyóújfalu ramp of the new section of the M4, which now crosses the border.

In addition to the agricultural areas, rows of trees, forests and a rest area, and then after the Berettyó and Kis-Körös bridges, after 13 minutes, we reached the place of the transfer of the road section, the border of the country. Mayors from both countries met, including László Papp, Debrecen’s first man, members of parliament and economic experts. Waiting a while, the security guards discreetly asked us to clear the back lane, and the ministers arrived. The large-blooded vehicles did roll, but Péter Szijjártó, with his Romanian counterpart, Chancellor and Chancellor Bogdan Lucian Aurescu, and Lucian Nicolae Bode, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communications, arrived on foot from the car parks for the delivery.

They can pass through Hungary

Lucian Nicolae Bode called the construction of the cross-border highway and the border crossing one of the most important projects of the two countries in recent years. He stressed that the Romanian side had completed the section on time, which was part of the Transylvanian highway under construction.

“Hungary and Romania are constructively cooperating in the current virus-prone situation.”

We ensure the mobility of people and goods. In the current situation, Romanian citizens can also pass through Hungary, and those who go to work can get to their jobs, Bogdan Lucian Aurescu said in his speech, adding that the details of future cooperation were discussed with his counterpart. Hungarian before the handover.

You need more border crossings

Peter Szjjártó said that cooperation with our neighbors largely depends on the connections we have with them. This has one of the biggest competitive disadvantages of Central Europe compared to Western Europe, because while in the West there are opportunities to cross the border every 2.5-3 kilometers, in Central Europe the average distance is 35-40 kilometers. Therefore, it is in Hungary’s national economic and strategic interest to have as many physical connections as possible with its neighbors.

– It is in the interest of our country to be connected with Romania as much and as densely as possible. This is good for economic cooperation, good for trade and good for the communities along the border, Péter Szijjártó noted. – It is foolish to only give up the second highway junction to Romania, while our neighbor to the east is our ninth most important partner, our fourth most important export market and the eighth most important destination country for Hungarian capital investment. Today, with the delivery of the M4, we can take a big step forward in this regard.

“This highway will help relieve truck congestion in Nagylak as well as commuters.”

This is the twelfth crossing point on the border of the two countries. We will continue the work, we have stayed with our ministerial colleagues to build the next motorway connection in the direction of Satu Mare in four years on Csenger and deliver it in 2024.
