The French state fined the municipality of Paris 90 euros for having too many women in its leadership. Mayor Anne Hidalgo called the decision absurd.
The sanction applies to the year 2018. According to the regulations, women and men must be in equal numbers in the management, the Ministry of Public Function has imposed sanctions on institutions that do not comply with this. Since then, the Ministry has abolished the obligation of the fine.
“I am glad that we receive a punishment for having too many women in leadership,” said the mayor at the Paris assembly. There were 11 women and 5 men in the municipal administration, or 69% women.
“It is very nice in the bureaucracy that he does not know the subtleties at all and is capable of everything,” said Hidalgo, who announced that he would pay the penalty together with his deputies and cabinet leaders. “I will recommend to all women leaders of factions, both in the majority government and in the opposition, to accompany them if they wish,” she added. “This punishment is, of course, absurd, unjust, irresponsible and dangerous,” said the mayor, who said France was lagging behind on the issue of women leaders.
Amélie de Montchalin, head of the civil service portfolio, acknowledged that this measure, which was revoked last year, was absurd. “The cause of women deserves more!
