On Friday, Szilárd Demeter, director of the Petőfi Literary Museum (PIM), published an article calling Europe the “György Soros gas chamber.” Although Demeter’s hideous writing has since been withdrawn under pressure from its bosses, the Budavár municipality considers it unacceptable to have a contract with an institution run by a man who denies or makes light of genocide. According to the decision of the former management of Fidesz, the municipality of Budavár has so far made the building of the Museum of Fairy Tales available to PIM free of charge. V. Naszályi has now announced that a contract with the museum will be terminated.
“We have no objections to the program, but the Municipality of Budavár is not willing to support the PIM while it is led by Demeter Szilárd. The other Contemporary Literature Workshop, which also operates in a free room, will in the future be in charge of the municipal cultural team ”.
Demeter wrote an article for Origo on Saturday about “György Soros’s gas chamber in Europe” and that Hungarians and Poles represent the new Jews today. The article provoked great outrage, and Hungarian and international Jewish organizations, as well as the Israeli embassy in Hungary, condemned Demeter’s words, which Rabbi Köves Slomo, who already had a cordial relationship with Fidesz, described as rude provocation and tastelessness. Demeter tried to keep her article on Facebook for a while, eventually pulling out and removing her Facebook page.
Since then, thousands have resigned, including many politicians, artists and public figures.
