Recovered from the Covid-19 disease, a Mexican who was once considered the most serious man in the world, attributes his recovery to the weight loss achieved through years of diet, exercise and surgery to tighten the stomach.

Juan Pedro Franco He weighed 595 pounds and entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2017 as the heaviest man. The 36-year-old weighs 208 pounds today, but his body, worn down by diabetes, hypertension and chronic lung disease, struggled to fight the coronavirus.

It is a very aggressive disease. My head ached, my body ached, I struggled with shortness of breath and fever. I belong to the group for which this disease is very risky

Said Franco, who lives in Aguascalientes.

Mexico ranks fourth in the world in terms of the number of deaths from the Covid-19 disease. Mexican children have the highest rates of obesity in the world and the second highest rate of obesity in the adult population. A quarter of the more than 74,000 Mexicans who died in Covid-19 were overweight. In addition, many of those who died suffered from some type of chronic disease, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Jose Antonio Castaneda, the head of the medical team treating Franco for extreme obesity, said patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are much more sensitive to serious complications. Their chances of survival are very slim, he added. (MTI)
