The building of the National Philharmonic of Moldova was completely burned down, only the fire went out on Friday at dawn.

There are two concert halls in the Chisinau Concert Center, named after Sergei Lunkevich, and valuable instruments have been burned, Mikhail Agafita, general director and artistic director of the Philharmonic, said on his Facebook page.

The fire broke out in the main building of the Philharmonic, the roof of which collapsed, burying the concert halls below it. Firefighters battled the flames for seven hours, burning an area of ​​3,500 square meters, writes 24.hu.

According to Mayor Svetlana Bivol, it is possible that the fire occurred during the renovation works, during a pipe welding. The roof of an adjoining restaurant was also burned in the fire.

The Philharmonic building was erected in 1912, when Moldova was still part of Tsarist Russia. The Moldavian Philharmonic Orchestra would have celebrated its 80th anniversary this fall.

According to driver Mikhail Agafita, CEO, now they can only expect “miracles or donations.” Moldova’s President Igor Dodon has sought the help of his country’s population and foreign partners and has promised that reconstruction will begin in March 2021.
