According to available data, the man was driving a car with Hungarian registration on the main road No. 85 in the Vitnyéd area towards Austria, when the police stopped him according to information from the National Investigation Office of the Reserve Police. Five illegal immigrants are suspected of being transported across the Hungarian-Austrian state border in the back seat of their car and in their trunk.
The driver, after being patrolled by patrol cars, stopped the car, then got out, pulled out a pistol and a hand grenade, and ran onto the grassy area of the road. The police followed him and asked him to stop. After failing to do so, a warning shot was fired. The man then turned his gun on himself and also detonated the hand grenade in his hand, killing him immediately. Others were not injured.
It turned out that the man transporting the migrants was a 52-year-old German citizen who was not unknown to the Austrian authorities: he was also being investigated in Austria for human trafficking.
Two of the car’s passengers were seized at the scene and taken to Győr-Moson-Sopron County Police Headquarters. On questioning, they were told that they had come to Hungary from Serbia and that the human smuggler had picked them up in a wooded area with his car and had traveled with him to the police action. Both said that Syrian nationals could not provide credible proof of their identity and the legality of their stay, so they would be escorted back to the temporary security border.
Three of his companions withdrew from the measure and fled the scene. They are presumed to be the same as the three foreigners detained in Austria by the Austrian police.
The circumstances of the case are being investigated by the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Police Headquarters and the Győr Regional Investigation Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Investigation Attorney General’s Office on the basis of a well-founded suspicion of human trafficking and other crimes.
