The Bundeswehr is also involved in the control of a new type of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in Portugal, where a new wave of the pathogen has triggered a wave of epidemics more devastating than ever.

According to an announcement by the German Defense Ministry on Monday, the operation, which was launched at the request of the Portuguese government, will be carried out by the Bundeswehr’s emergency medical unit. In addition to military doctors, nurses and hygiene experts, teams are also dispatched to the EU partner country, including 50 ventilators, 150 therapy beds, and 150 infusion sets.

At the moment, 26 members of the Bundeswehr are participating in the operation, leaving on Wednesday and replacing them after three weeks. All received the first dose of the SARS-Cov-2 vaccine. The healing soldiers and nurses will work in a Lisbon hospital, and the hygienists can be transferred to other hospitals if necessary.

In Portugal, SARS-Cov-2 version B.1.1.7, first identified in the UK, is spreading rapidly.

A much more contagious viral mutation triggered a wave of epidemics that brought the healthcare system to the brink of overload

in the country of the Iberian Peninsula.

According to the latest data from the European Union Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on January 28, the number of new infections registered in two weeks per one hundred thousand inhabitants is 1,429.43. Therefore, Portugal is by far the first European country surveyed by the ECDC. The second is neighboring Spain, where 1,026.05 infections were recorded per 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks, and the third is the Czech Republic, where the figure is 981.71.
