The effect of the coronavirus on national mortality data is already visible

According to CSO data, 2,816 people died in Hungary in week 43 (October 19-25).

The graph below shows how the number of deaths per week has changed compared to the average for the last 5 years. It is clear that more people than usual are dying from the coronavirus epidemic in recent weeks.

The figure below shows how much less is compared to the previous year, resp. several died each week this year. In week 43, 461 more people died than at the same time last year, while that week there were 283 official victims of the coronavirus.

The following graph shows the situation compared to the average of the last 5 years. This year, more than 400 more people died in week 43 than the average of the previous 5 years.

You can see that some columns are “missing” at the bottom of the chart. This is because even though we know the number of coronavirus deaths each day (orange line), we have to wait a few weeks to sum up all the deaths. Therefore, the latest available data covers week 43. According to the orange line, that is, the number of deaths from coronavirus, the situation is not expected to improve.
