Bands rehearsing there will have to leave the Eastern Bloc on a parcel with the Dürer Garden before November 1, and probably the Dürer Garden, which has been operating on the former ELTE property since 2008, has only one month left, Telex wrote that Dürer’s operators were prepared. which should close by early 2021 at the latest and are already looking for the new location.
In the summer of 2018, the billionaire István Garancsi (friend of Viktor Orbán) became interested in the former ELTE property on the Ajtósi Dürer line, where before 1989 he also had the MSZMP party school. The almost 37 thousand mtwoIn connection with the Liget project, a luxury hotel is planned.
The Dürer Garden and the Eastern Block rehearsal room complex, where nearly 100 bands try to live community life in the Crypt, have been in operation since then, but can only stay until the end of October. The tenants of the room received this letter last week:
“After months of hard work, we have unfortunately reached the point where we have to realize that despite all our efforts, we will not be able to winterize the Eastern Bloc. As you may already know, due to the demolition work being carried out in the area, a significant part of the public services were separated from the Block building; so also on the gas and the central boiler. Although the pipes, radiators and pumps for the central heating of the building are in order, the heating of the water could only be solved with a high-performance electric boiler or diesel technology. We have received several offers to install and operate it, but the amount of the cost kicks in on an item that even several years of rent would not be enough to extract the cost of 3-4 months of heating. A similar and horrible amount was secured to install a new electrical backbone to which individual electric radiators could be connected. The current electrical network of the building could not cope with 15-20% of the rents being electric radiators or air heaters, so it is not an option for everyone to solve the heating themselves, from now on.
According to Telex, demolition work is underway in the area, which has begun to hamper national gangs that are not in very good existential condition due to the epidemic. With the end of the Eastern Bloc, the situation of rehearsal rooms in Budapest will deteriorate further. Usually there are 2-3 bands that rent a common rehearsal room, but now there is not enough free capacity in the city for the almost 100 bands left without the room to find new seats.
Telex writes that the situation is getting worse because the area of the Public Slaughterhouse, which previously enjoyed monumental protection and also serves as a rehearsal for dozens of gangs, was attracted by the Turkish billionaire businessman Adnan Polat, an old friend of the Orbán family, to build there a residential park.
