The Brussels Court of Appeal ruled: II. Albert, the former Belgian king, is the biological father of Delphine Boël, who can now take the name Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha in honor of her father when she was a Belgian princess.

The public service RTBF said that Boël’s children, Joséphine and Oscar, will also become princesses and princes starting today. Born out of wedlock to the former monarch, this year’s 52-year-old son is now eligible for the royal majesty speech.

II. Albert ascended to the throne in 1993. Six years later, the Belgian press reported that the king had a fourth child, a girl, from an extramarital affair in the 1960s. The former ruler had previously refused to be considered the father of Delphine Boël.

Boël went to court in the summer of 2013 and demanded a DNA test. He said he doesn’t want money or rank, just certainty. In October 2018, the court that heard Boël’s lawsuit ordered the former ruler, now 86, to carry out a DNA test, who first went to the Court of Cassation and then, after a long legal charge, decided to comply with the court’s decision.

According to the Belgian Constitution, the person of the king is inviolable, inviolable, not only in a sense of criminal law but also in a sense of civil law: no process can be started against him, that is, he is literally above the law . Immunity, on the other hand, applies only as long as he is the ruler, that is, II. Albert abdicated the throne in 2013 for health reasons in favor of his eldest son, Philip.

At the end of January this year, the former ruler announced through his lawyers that the paternity test showed that he was the biological father of Delphine Boël.

II. Albert had previously half-admitted that he had an affair with someone in the late 1960s. In his 1999 Christmas greetings, the king said that more than 30 years earlier, their marriage had been through a serious crisis that they had managed to overcome. (MTI)
