“Currently, we do not rule out any assumptions, nor do we prefer them,” said Lyon’s attorney general, Nicolas Jacquet.

The man presented corresponds to the personal description given by eyewitnesses, but did not have the weapon used to attack. Authorities are currently investigating his possible involvement in the assassination attempt.

Nikolaos Kakavelakis, a 52-year-old priest of Greek nationality, was in the VII. He closed down a church on Pere Chevrier street in his district on Saturday afternoon around four o’clock when he was shot twice with a rifle.

The priest was taken to hospital in serious condition, wounded in the stomach, he told paramedics that he did not know his attacker. The man was shot up close, according to police sources, and the shots hit him in the liver.

The attack was not witnessed after the quarantine announced to curb the coronavirus epidemic made it impossible to stay on the streets for no reason, but the perpetrator was seen by several fleeing the scene.

The case has been investigated by the criminal police on behalf of the local prosecutor’s office on suspicion of attempted murder, and the anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office has not yet addressed the case.

“There was no worship, the priest did not dress reverend,” indicated police sources. BFM news television was informed that the priest would be leaving his community a few days after his identity was disputed in the local Orthodox community. Therefore, the police are investigating whether personal settlement may be in the background, but have not ruled out other assumptions.

The country has the highest level of terrorist preparedness since the attack two days ago, when an Islamist assassination attempt with three knives was carried out at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice.

Although a general quarantine was implemented on Friday to curb the coronavirus epidemic across the country, religious sites and cemeteries were exempted from closing over the weekend to commemorate All Saints and the Dead.
