According to Telex, the bands rehearsing there will have to leave the Eastern Bloc on a plot with the Dürer Garden in the vicinity of the Budapest City Park before November 1. According to the news portal, which still works only on Facebook, this makes it likely that the Dürer Garden, which has operated on the former ELTE property since 2008, is only a few months away.
They remind you that the future of the Dürer Garden became really uncertain when in the summer of 2018 István Garancsi became interested in the former ELTE property on the Ajtósi Dürer line. According to the news, a luxury hotel is planned on an area of 37,000 square meters, which is closely linked to the Liget project.
Almost a hundred Hungarian bands are rehearsing at the Eastern Block, among them The Qualitons, Mary PopKids or Fran Palermo. The letter received by the musicians who rented the room reached Telex. It states:
After months of hard work, we have unfortunately reached the point where we have to realize that, despite all our efforts, we will not be able to winterize the Eastern bloc. As you may already know, due to the demolition work being carried out in the area, a significant part of the public services were separated from the Block building; so also on the gas and the central boiler. Although the pipes, radiators and pumps for the central heating of the building are in order, the heating of the water could only be solved with a high-performance electric boiler or diesel technology. We have received several offers to install and operate it, but the amount of the cost kicks in on an item that even several years of rent would not be enough to extract the cost of 3-4 months of heating. A similar and horrible amount was secured to install a new electrical backbone to which individual electric radiators could be connected. The current electrical network of the building could not support even 15-20% of the rents being electric radiators or air heaters, so it is not an option for everyone to solve the heating by themselves from now on, individually .
According to Telex, the demolition work in the area that has started in recent weeks has started to hamper the gangs. Unpacking and packing became longer and more complicated and it was only possible to enter the area between 3 and 3 in the afternoon and pack the instruments for the bands that rented the rooms. The manager of one of the bands said:
Many bands simply don’t have the money to put together a well-sounding and well-equipped rehearsal room, especially for beginning or emerging bands.
therefore usually 2-3 bands rent space together, however, there is currently not enough free capacity in the city for the almost 100 bands left without a room to move to a new location immediately.
The news portal knows that the operators of the Dürer Garden are already prepared to close on December 31, but no later than next year, and are already looking for a new place to move to one of the underground music centers of the capital, if not the most important. Dürer’s press officer, Dániel Ágoston he said:
We now know that if all goes well under the circumstances, we will be able to operate until December 31, 2020. After that, it all depends on when the real estate development in the area enters the stage where our part of the building has to be evacuated. .
He added that they have a plan B on where to move and negotiations are ongoing. He did not give Telex details about these, but said that the Dürer Garden would certainly not cease to exist.
