The rare astronomical event could also be observed with the naked eye. Anyone left behind may regret it next time, it will be similar in 2080.

Even on previous nights, Jupiter and Saturn got much closer compared to previous alignments. The two known planets of our solar system “meet” approximately every 20 years, but the current coexistence was even closer. This has not been the case since the 18th century, and much remains to be seen: a similar astronomical phenomenon will not be until 2080.

The unusual coexistence of Jupiter and Saturn could be seen with the naked eye, also from Hungary. The two planets were separated by only 6 arc minutes, meaning that the distance between them was only a fifth of the diameter of the lunar disk.

The phenomenon was worth observing with binoculars after sunset, well above the southwest horizon.

The celestial phenomenon arises from the movement and orbital time of the Earth, Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter will orbit the Sun in 11 years, and Saturn in more than three decades, astronomer László Kiss, director general of the Center for Research in Astronomy and Earth Sciences (CSFK), said of the coexistence.
