The Slovenian government’s epidemiological commission recommended to the cabinet that the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine be suspended among people under the age of 60, Bojana Beovic, chairman of the commission, said on Sunday.

The panel issued a new recommendation because the vaccine was suspected of causing blood clots in people under the age of 60. Until this issue is clarified, Slovenia, like Germany and the Netherlands, should limit the vaccine from the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company to those over 60, Beovic said.

At the suggestion of the Slovenian Institute of Public Health (NIJZ), due to limited vaccine volumes and logistical problems, the 60-64 age group is vaccinated with AstraZeneca, while the older population is vaccinated with Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna.

Due to the risk of thrombosis, several countries briefly discontinued the use of AstraZeneca in March. Subsequently, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) also tested the vaccine and found the vaccine to be effective and safe.

Referring to the two studies, the manufacturer stated that the benefits of using the vaccine far outweigh the risks in all adult age groups.
