The first high-resolution panorama of the red planet’s surface was sent home by the Perseverance Martian, the American Space Agency (NASA) said on Wednesday.

The experts combined the 360-degree panoramic image of 142 images taken on February 21 by Martian’s Mastcam-Z camera system.

The image shows an arid region with geological formations, including a rock blown by the wind and the edge of the Martian’s landing site, Jezero crater.

NASA says the state-of-the-art camera system will help researchers study atmospheric conditions in the crater and identify rocks and areas of sediment that can then be examined by Martian instruments.

Jim Bell, an Arizona State University researcher who monitors the operations of the Mastcam-Z camera system, said the images show Perseverance landed in an excellent location.

After traveling more than 470 million kilometers, the one-ton, six-wheeled Perseverance landed last Thursday in the 250-meter-deep Jezero crater.

It is scheduled to work on the planet for a full Martian year, 687 Earth days, where it will search for traces of microbial life.
