Tamás Vitray is in mourning: his first reporter died
The Kossuth and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist interviewed former athlete Rafer Johnson, who died at the age of 86 in 1958, when he was an absolute beginner.
“We were two years after the 1956 revolution. It was a kind of gesture on the part of the Americans to let their athletes in. They signaled their acceptance of the situation in Hungary, it was a very big event. I didn’t even know what television was then Hungarian Radio I worked in the English section, I regularly made materials in foreign languages, so my name could be mentioned in the interview, ”Vitray told Blikk, adding that the 199-centimeter athlete who died on December 2 was laughed a lot at the difference in height at the time.
