The Asus TUF series of games was not created in secret with the intention of offering a very high quality alternative to the game at an affordable price, while guaranteeing even a durable court, hence the origin of the word mosaic TUF (The Ultimate Force). In return, the design of the series machines themselves does not fall into the “elegant” category, and they had to make tradeoffs here and there due to the value for money. That’s why we were really looking forward to the arrival of a new piece in the series at our editorial office, the TUF Gaming A15 (FA506I), as this machine seemed to stand out from its peers when it saw technical data and first images. Let’s see what we received after unpacking the item from our current test from your box.
I have to say: we were not disappointed. The TUF Gaming A15 is a great step forward at first glance. While I particularly liked the rugged TUF notebooks, with aggressive lines and not so cold, when placed alongside, for example, its predecessor, the FX505 or FX705, it is immediately clear how much more elegant and stylish the lines emerged this time with the ASUS designer. Given the minimalist yet distinctive lines of the A15, we may not immediately think that we have a gaming laptop in our hands, which is especially beneficial if we want to use it in the workplace, for example, and not everyone in the meeting is looking at RGB colors. machine in front of us. Compared to its predecessor, it is a much more compact piece (according to the manufacturer, the size of the breed has been reduced by 7%), but it is not yet small, as it weighs 2.3 kg and has dimensions of 359 , 8 x 256 x 24.7 mm.
On the cover, of course, the TUF laser-etched wing logo adorns it, in a slightly darker shade than the rest of the cover. You can hardly find a more swanky element in it, maybe just the honeycomb vents at the bottom of the machine look wacky, but a little later on that. The A15 didn’t get a metal cover, like expensive premium laptops in general, but as we noted, keeping the price under control was an important consideration here as well. However, the plastic cover has no cheap effect and is very sturdy, with minimal flex, nano, as the TUF series is still a prerequisite for the machine to meet MIL-STD-810H military standard, it is That is, it can withstand shock and vibration, temperature and humidity fluctuations, as well as UV radiation. That is, it can easily withstand continuous transport, but even fall to the ground; The last thing I didn’t try, of course, at least not intentionally.
Among the connectors you will find everything important: on the left you will find the network drive, a 3.5 mm combo connector, a USB type C and two USB 3.0 and HDMI ports, while on the other you will find the location of the LAN cable and a port USB 2.0. Since the A15 is also recommended for work, a memory card reader could still fit in it, but of course this can easily be remedied in other ways.
The A15’s screen is a 15.6-inch IPS panel that, although only in Full HD resolution, is capable of updating the image to 144Hz (but there is also a 60Hz version), which is especially good for gaming. The panel has Adaptive Sync support, which means the screen tearing error that often occurs in games is a great solution. The screen image is not bad, but of course it is not the most vivid, perhaps to feel the tradeoffs made for the lowest price in this area, but of course it is still very suitable for displaying games and even basic tasks of video trimming or image editing. The sleeve surrounding the screen has slimmed down anyway, but still, a webcam fits on top, which is especially welcome in today’s home office times.
Although the keyboard was not yet available in Hungary, it will be available on the market in Hungary. It is big enough and very comfortable to type on (press stroke is good and click sound is particularly satisfying at the end), it is almost impossible to put it aside and of course it can also fit next to the numeric keypad full. Similar good things can be said about the touchpad: it is not a problem to operate a paddle with your hands and it is precise enough to control.
The A15 sounds pretty good, the treble and mids sound good, but the bass isn’t real. In other words, we recommend watching YouTube videos and trailers instead of listening to classical music, but actually connecting a speaker is recommended for watching movies and games. And that shouldn’t be a problem, since the machine supports 7.1 with DTS: X Ultra audio technology.
But let’s see the bear, that is, what the A15 is capable of. Well, at this point we can barely connect to the machine: in the version that came to us, an 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 4800H (2.9 GHz) processor with 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and the power of a video card was marked NVIDIA RTX 2060 (6GB GDDR6), and of course ultrafast SSD storage. Complemented by 1080p gaming ray tracing, this is more than perfect, running a series of games has shown that even resource-intensive titles like Gears 5, Forza Horizon 4, CoD: Warzone, Doom Eternal, or FarCry 5 can easily squeeze out above 60 fps at maximum settings, and has even kept Shadow of the Tomb Raider stable above 30 frames per second using RTX.
Here comes the aforementioned honeycomb cooling solution on the bottom of the laptop, which allows the machine to dissipate heat from the upper areas to prevent the machine from overheating. And let’s say the solution works very well, we don’t even experience actual warming up on the machine, even during the game. Of course, this comes at a small price, as many of the built-in fans (which are self-cleaning) make a lot of noise when they deliver high power, especially when turning on the Turbo mode, which takes them even further. Switching to the Performance option, which in principle targets a noise level of 40dB, is not much better, the A15 evokes the sound of a drone about to take off, but what good are the headphones, if not to remedy this ?
The ASUS TUF Gaming A15 can make some understandable compromises, but its polishing power, versatility, and more compact size make up for it perfectly. Not to mention that in that price range, one of the best options is to crave a portable game and a durable co-worker in one person.
