In the social aspect, he defines himself as a High Performance Specialist. Could you introduce us to what that specialist does?

My goal is to get the most out of athletes, regardless of sport. He began an interview with the Index with a very definite statement Shane Tusup. – Every job is a performance, like what kind of interview is being done with me right now or how they are holding a press conference. I see everything as a job to be maximized. That’s what I learned, that’s what I understand best. He takes football where the most important thing is to get the ball into the goal, to score a goal. How can you get this? You have to work on the location of the players, communication with your teammates, the game in general. I have studied athletes both from a physical and mental perspective, as a coach this is also part of my job. It’s like being the leader of a startup – you have to see everything from marketing to finance to production and decision making. You know where you want to go and you want to see the whole picture for that. I never looked at myself, keeping by the business example, as a financial or marketing associate. My swim training activity is just one puzzle among many.

What qualifications do you have in addition to your swimming coach title?

I studied psychology and kinesiology, and I even studied sports psychology; It set me on the path to continuous improvement and challenged myself and the athletes I work with.

Does your personal development mean that you are constantly training?

Yes, I always study, I usually read a book a week, I do research day after day. I work with swimmers, footballers, from whom I receive questions and information almost constantly. I learn from them and they learn from me. A III. They are very open with me in the district. If I don’t understand what is happening in the field or in training, they will explain it to me, and it works the other way around. We always discuss why we do it.

Work with more and more athletes. Are they looking for you or are you offering to help?

Every situation is different, Dominik Szoboszlai, for example, approached him through his management. So far, I have been following his run and cheering him on as he was in the picture above me so it all worked. Most swimmers have a phone number, it’s a close family. The key is to agree with our ideas, we can be successful working together. I am available to anyone who asks me for help. Obviously I can’t work with all the athletes, the Hungarian representatives have an advantage.

Taking Hungarian sport to a new level – that’s why we all work towards a common goal. It is important to inspire the next generation to play sports and give people a lasting experience.

Like Ferencváros, who reached the group stage of the Champions League and was applauded by the whole country. More and more athletes are calling us to sit down and talk, they have many questions.

What are the most common questions they ask you?

It varies according to the situation of the particular athlete. Most of the time, this is how we get to the next level, how we can get bigger, stronger and faster. But there were also those who did not know what piece of the puzzle was missing to get the most out of it. Many times there is not even a specific question, they just want to talk because something pushes their heart and they want to tell it. Also, in many cases, I prefer to ask to know and understand everything.

We want a skyscraper, not a one-story house, but all construction must start from the basics.

The swimmers he works with emphasize that he uses completely different methods. Can we get an idea of these?

The key to everything is working closely with the athlete, treating you as a partner. It’s not that I set up a business and provide you with a service. Together we form a company and build a project. We work together to achieve something special. You have to understand with athletes that I am not instructing them, but we are partners in all this. They have to give me feedback all the time and I have to trust them and get to know them as much as possible. Honesty and trust are also important. If someone says it hurts somewhere, then I need to know that it is not out of laziness. The most important thing is to treat athletes as equals.

He was chosen coach of the year four times …

… still amazing – we both laughed at the otherwise dry fact.

Previously, the board of the Hungarian Swimming Association was of the opinion that he would not be allowed to enter the environment due to his behavior, although the MÚSZ is not really open to meeting you. Has this changed since then?

I sat down to speak with the president of the association, Sándor Wladár, and Enikő Török. There have been positive changes in the recent period. The coronavirus epidemic makes the whole swimming thing difficult, there are hardly any competitions, this is a special period. In the federation they know that I am only for a phone call. The relationship between us is constantly improving, it has never been so good, which I am very happy about.

As mentioned, most of the competitions have been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus. How has this affected your method, whose starting point is continuous racing?

The entire world of sport was negatively affected by the pandemic. Nobody knows what’s next, everything changes from one day to the next. Each athlete is different, we have to adapt to the situation. Now we are not focusing on hard work, but on rebuilding, or the basics, or things that other times do not necessarily have time. For me, racing is the sport itself.

For swimmers, training is not essentially a sport,

it’s just a necessary thing that must happen. They get paid for tournaments, they have to compete. As we can see, soccer has continued, games are played. I think it’s the sour pepper of the sport, you have to travel and be there in tournaments, like an NBA player does, for example, that’s the expectation of the athletes as well. There is no good answer. We work with athletes, we try to find out what is best for them, we test. We haven’t experienced this before so there is nothing to get ourselves out of, we have to walk our own path.

Now he also works with soccer players. How long are you in the world of football, have you followed the sport so far?

I am constantly looking now, but so far I have been quite in the picture. I knew who the best players were and what was happening in the sport, although I never pursued myself. So it was not entirely new to me, although I have yet to learn the rules. My great advantage in swimming was that I knew all the rules and loopholes, to a level where I could even have been a judge. When I started playing soccer, I had to reinterpret everything.

Now I don’t see football games as good games as when I saw Balázs Dzsudzsák in the national team from the box.

I observe the movement of the players and from a change of direction or position I notice that it is their weakness and we have to work on strengthening their trunk.

In Hungary, a larger group of supporters simply call out the weak and lazy footballers. Do you agree with that?

Absolutely not! I see these guys in the gym, I see how much they want. Everyone is obviously on a different level. We also have a joke with Peter (Péter Holoda, World Cup bronze medal swimmer – ed.) That he is lazy because he is a sprinter in a country whose swimmers are strong in the long run. I know they say the same to footballers and earn a lot. Footballers work hard, they are willing to do almost anything you ask of them to keep going. The desire to act burns in them. Fans always look through different lenses – if the game doesn’t go that way in some matches, they immediately spot someone who is lazy. It’s like Danny Green is ruining the winning basket in the NBA Grand Final. However, few people think at the moment that it is for an athlete: in a stressful and hectic situation with 16 seconds to go in the game, it is probably one of the most important moments of his career. This is not understood by many and it is just floating before their eyes that they make a lot of money and then do everything right.

Is it physically or mentally more difficult to progress than the athletes you work with?

The two go together, they cannot be separated.

We can put an extra dial on the bar to do squats, or you can run more if your mindset isn’t right and you don’t always want to improve.

There must be a constant balance between the two. We can work on both, but there will come a point where both will need to be in place to move forward. A III. I work with six footballers with different personalities in the district, but the method and goal are the same: to increase concentration, determination, focus, and therefore performance.

Where is the limit on this? How long can measurable performance improve?

You cannot say an exact number for this. Take Aaron (Áron Borvető, a player from District III – ed.), Who in my opinion does not use his power, although he is a great fast and explosive player. If we can make you believe even more in yourself, the limit is the starry sky. Many times not everything is what it seems. It is important to get the most out of athletes, which is different for everyone. We can’t say we’ll be the next CDR in Leipzig, but who knows, anything could happen. We advance step by step towards our goal.

He also recently started his golf career with great ambitions. How many are Shane Tusup currently in the world rankings for long distance golf?

I don’t think I’m using it either. the swimmer laughed. – The races have been suspended due to the coronavirus, the season is over. When the epidemic is over, I will try to reintroduce golf into my program. Anyway, it turned out pretty good, I really fell in love with this sport. I also played with three world champions, which was a great experience for me. I didn’t make it to the World Cup, but I did get good results this season. I look forward to the next one!

He returned home to the United States and then returned to Hungary, or did he really leave? What made you try your luck again in our country?

It was a good opportunity, I felt that I could do a lot for Hungarian sports. I can have a greater impact here on athletes, people, and the next generation than, say, in Los Angeles. I want to be a motivation and inspiration for young people to see that limits can be crossed better than they think.
