The first Tuscan Grand Prix did not start smoothly at Mugello: on the first lap two of them dropped out (Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly), the safety car stayed on track for six laps. When the field returned to race pace, another accident occurred, with Nicholas Latifi, Carlos Sainz, Antonio Giovinazzi and Kevin Magnussen also eliminated. The race was interrupted with a red flag, 13 runners lined up for the repeated start from a standstill because Esteban Ocon had given up the race in the meantime for technical reasons.

Fifteen laps before the end, then came another break: Lance Stroll crashed his car into the rubber wall. The stalemate continued again, and although it looked like Daniel Ricciardo could get on the podium behind the two Mercedes, Alexander Albon ultimately finished third. The 24-year-old British-born Thai rider reached the top three for the first time in his life.

Ferrari, which also had better days, was eighth (Charles Leclerc) and tenth (Sebastian Vettel) in the 1000th F1 race.

Lewis Hamilton is one victory away from Michael Schumacher’s absolute record (91 races won).

The race started at 15.10, the checkered flag at the finish line was waved at 17.34. The World Cup will continue in two weeks in Sochi with the Russian Grand Prix.
