Familiarization with the field continued during the second free practice of the Portuguese Grand Prix. The teams’ preparation was hampered by the fact that in the first half hour, they had to test prototype Pirelli tires scheduled for 2021. In the first thirty minutes, the program was not dictated by the stables but by the Italian rubber manufacturer . There was a lot of traffic on the highly technical track. The drivers were driving unmarked tires, not even the teams knew what mix they were running.
After the rubber test, this year’s tires were put on, so the lap times also started to pick up.
In Portugal, an F1 race is taking place after a 24-year hiatus, but for the first time in Portimao. The drivers tried to do as many laps as possible to familiarize themselves with the characteristics of the track, and this was necessary, the uncertainty of the drivers was indicated by a series of abandonment tracks. Verstappen-Stroll Battle
Then Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll collided after the Dutch driver went to the Racing Point side, but Stroll did not notice Verstappen’s Red Bull. Verstappen wanted to overtake the Canadian driver in the corner, but when he turned, he knocked out Stroll. Verstappen was able to get into the box, but Stroll was trapped in the gravel bed.
Verstappen called Strollt blindly, while Otmar Szafnauer blamed the Dutch driver for Sky sports on his program and said his driver wanted to complete two fast laps in a row. British channel experts believed they were half to blame for the incident, but Stroll would have had at least 10 seconds to see Red Bull in the mirror. In any event, the FIA is investigating the case.
Hamilton suffered during the second free practice, unable to do a really fast lap. In the first free practice sessions, the six-time world champion achieved a better lap time. The McLarens, on the other hand, looked very strong in practice on Friday.
