The castle of Savoy

The construction of the baroque castle of Ráckeve began in 1702 according to the plans of the architect Hildebrandt. Its floor plan resembles the French castle of Vauy-le-Vicomte, while the building itself resembles the Belveder Palace on Rennweg in Vienna. After the death of Savoy in 1736, the estate became the crown and then gradually lost its original function. It was also used as a warehouse and barn. By the 1960s, his condition had completely deteriorated, almost collapsing. The building encloses an interior courtyard with protected trees. The railing of the terrace in front of the dome is decorated with mythological figures. According to legend, the figure in the middle represents Jenő Savoyai himself. During the remodeling of the 1970s, in the absence of the original plans, it was deduced from the rest of the elements how it could have been at its peak.

Savoy Castle closed in 2017.
