Donald Trump fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Monday. His decision was announced on Twitter by the outgoing president. Mark Esper was the head of the United States Department of Defense for a year, succeeding Christopher C. Miller, who had previously become director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Following the announcement, other Pentagon leaders have resigned consecutively: James Anderson, the ministry’s secretary of state for political planning, Joseph Kernan, the ministry’s secretary of state for intelligence, and Jen Stewart, Esper’s chief of staff, will also leave the Pentagon, writes The Hill.

James Anderson has been temporarily appointed to replace Anthony Tata, who in 2018 called former President Barack Obama a terrorist leader on Twitter. Joseph Kernan will be replaced by Ezra Cohen-Watnick and Jen Stewart by Kash Patel. They are both known as Trump’s staunch believers.

Adam Smith, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Armed Forces, criticized the personnel changes, saying

If this is the start of a trend where the president is firing national security experts to appoint loyalists, the next 70 days will be incredibly damaging and dangerous in the worst possible way.

Donald Trump will hold his presidency until January 20. Democrat Joe Bident, winner of the November 3 presidential election, will take office that day.
