Zsolt Jeszenszkypolitical fan, presenter, creative director of Pesti TV andTamás Lattmann An international lawyer, public figure was a guest on the Index Speaker podcast before the first US presidential debate.

After the Wednesday morning discussion between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in Hungarian time, we contacted them again to find out what they saw in the duel.

Who won the debate?

JZS: It is a difficult question, there is no clear winner. He was surprised that Biden performed so much beyond expectations, no nonsense. Sometimes his tongue would get stuck, but they were just tongues, not brain shorts. Trump was a bit below expectations.

LT: There were certain points in the debate where I almost fell asleep. I woke up with a screw. There is no clear winner, everyone tried to play their assigned role. I feel like Biden did better now, Trump exaggerated things sometimes. You have had a lot of unnecessary discussions with the moderator.

By many echoes, the tone was extremely harsh, with Trump and Biden mostly insulting each other. Is this how you saw it or is this the tone for you? go away?

JZS: That is correct. It goes for me, but only because I have no illusions. The debate mapped the current political situation. There was no respect for each other. There have been personality bumps on such occasions in the past, but there is no doubt that this one has gone beyond the previous levels. The host, Chris Wallace, was biased toward Biden, Trumpon also asked for things the Democratic nominee didn’t do. Trumpon blamed the radical right-wing but fringe Proud Boys organization, Biden no Antifat, which is much more active than the Proud Boys.

LT: It looks good on me personally, my tolerance is above average. In any case, there has been no precedent for such disregard for commonly agreed rules, that she was clearly in a bad mood at times. The tone was terribly unworthy. Biden now applied a surprising amount of technique that had not been typical of previous debates: he ignored the interlocutor and spoke openly to his own audience. This is what Trump did as usual. Apparently the president was not used to being looked at like that.

What does all this mean for future discussions?

JZS: Now there is a missed drug test (which measures the use of a performance enhancer) and an examination of possible electronic devices hidden in the ear, which was requested by the Republican side. Admittedly, Biden didn’t get the two breaks he asked for either, although he held out well for 90 minutes. They are visibly afraid of it. You can go back on the following, arguing that I see that Trump cannot be argued meaningfully. This certainly resonates well with some Democratic voters.

LT: One or two amendments can be used to prepare the interlocutors. There may not be another discussion, although there are two more times. By not making a big mistake, Biden was able to stabilize the Democratic electoral field. Bernie Sanders (the Democratic opponent of the pre-Biden election – ed.) Was asked in hindsight, who may not have taken such a strong stand alongside his party’s presidential candidate. He stressed that Democrats should set aside any differences of opinion.
