An infectious case caused by a British coronavirus mutation has been identified in China, the Chinese Epidemiological Center reported on Wednesday.
The carrier is a 23-year-old Chinese woman who flew from the UK to Shanghai. After his arrival, his virus test on December 14 came back positive, so he was transferred to a Shanghai hospital for isolation. The patient had only mild symptoms. Two days before his return, his UK virus test still showed a negative result.
A genetic analysis of a sample taken from a woman on December 24 showed that the virus that caused her infection was different from the variant behind the cases identified in Shanghai in November. Research has shown that it is a new variant that has been circulating in the UK since the end of October.
According to the MTI report, the Shanghai authorities have taken several measures to prevent the spread of the new variant, including a greater emphasis than usual on contact investigation and disinfection of all places where the patient has visited.
The British coronavirus mutation, experts say, could be at least 50 percent, but even 75 percent more contagious than other variants of the virus.
And it has already appeared in various parts of the world, including the United States, Portugal, South Korea, and Chile. To rule out the spread of the new variant, several countries have suspended the reception of passengers from the United Kingdom. The Chinese aviation authority suspended scheduled flights between the United Kingdom and China from Monday.
To rule out the possibility of the virus infiltrating the country again from abroad, the Chinese leadership suspended the entry of most foreigners into the country from the end of March and considerably reduced the number of international flights allowed. In addition, only passengers with a negative virus test will be able to board China-bound planes, who will have to spend 14 days upon arrival in designated accommodation.
The Chinese pharmaceutical inspection on Wednesday issued the first conditional market approval for a coronavirus vaccine developed in China.
Sinopharm, a Chinese state pharmaceutical company, said the vaccine provides protection against infection with an effectiveness of 79.34 percent, according to an interim analysis of the results of clinical trials. And China’s National Health Commission said at a press conference on Thursday that China will provide coronavirus vaccines free of charge to the entire population.
