Paul to the earth, death to the liver. The vast majority of potential drinkers know the lyrics to these songs by heart. Alcohol use is deeply ingrained in our culture, and its tolerance and often its support are surrounded by a national consensus. However, the great national consensus made Hungary the homeland of 900,000 alcoholics. (according to WHO estimates). The governmental attitude is well symbolized by the for the freedom of making brandy although there is no agreed policy program to curb alcoholism.

Monthly 100-120 cans of beer are sold out at home

István lives in a small town on the Great Plain (we changed the name), we asked him about his own drinking habits.
How often and how much do you drink per month?

I am a homegrown drinker, I drink alcohol almost every day, almost exclusively beer. Drinking at home has now become part of the afternoon break after work. In a month, I am sure I will drink 100-120 cans! If I rarely get involved in company, I also have half. I rarely considered wine dangerous, probably because at the end of my high school years, but especially in college, we almost always drank it and often drank drunk at the time.

What short-term and long-term effects did you see on yourself?

I’ve been drinking regularly for a long time, I don’t know what it was like without it anymore. It is visible on my skin, it is visible under my eyes, on my teeth. I have found that I have more difficulty sleeping due to alcohol so I am constantly tired until my body is exhausted once, at which point I can sleep for 12 hours.

The effects on my lifestyle are much more surprising: I settled into a lifestyle that does not fit in with the fact that others have natural and worldly things. I, for example, don’t go big shopping, I put things off in the apartment. The same goes for social life: two out of three, I refuse to be called somewhere because I prefer to drink alone. During the spring quarantine period, I let loose even more than usual as I was even more at home than usual, even though I’m the home-living type.

As a result, were you interested in the dry November challenge? What do you expect from him?

I met him completely by accident, maybe RTL had a compilation of Dry November two or three years ago that I saw by accident. I looked it up, read it but didn’t take it seriously, it just seemed like a fun, ruined pub, a Facebook challenge that was all the rage to pull off. Anyway, I did it right away, I did it for a month, but it didn’t change my life, I need more for that.

What does it take to not drink alcohol for a month?

It really is just self-control. I don’t consider myself an addict, I didn’t develop a physical addiction and if I wanted to, I could stop. (I feel like I don’t have a problem with regular drinking, but with the state of mind that makes me drink.) If you think that it is a task that simply has to be done, I think it is easy because then you know that you can go back to the old wheelhouse in December. I believe that in thirty days everyone can change some of their habits. It’s harder when you have cramps because you know you’re an alcoholic, because then you shouldn’t stop drinking for a month, but forever! That, I think, can be quite depressing.

Here you can try!

In these circumstances, the awareness-raising effort of the Blue Dot Foundation, which has been offering a soberly clear month-long withdrawal tolerance test to a population that balances on the threshold of alcoholism but still considers itself a social drinker , has been understandable.

Ferenc Dávid, campaign director for the Dry November Challenge, warns in a document sent to our newspaper that the situation in Covid is now worse than in the spring, but the rules are more flexible. The epidemic has radically changed the lives of a significant number of people. Our daily activities have been transformed and assumed new frameworks such as learning, working, traveling or having fun. Uncertainty can cause a feeling of loneliness in many people. And if Hungarians are left alone, they will drink, as pubs and discos are open. Another serious problem for heavy drinkers is that

Because of the coronavirus, those infected in crowded healthcare are a priority, while those with alcohol problems are excluded from care.

Addiction consultant Sándor Bajzáth adds that cohesion can increase alcohol use in many poorly functioning families or spouses. The Dry November Challenge may appeal to those who have already considered that their drinking habits may not be leading their lives in the right direction.

When I already have doubts about whether I am capable of assuming that challenge, it already means that something inside is no longer right.

However, those unaffected by the problem are also encouraged to report this test to their regular drinking friends.

The Special Report of the World Drug Survey analyzed the effects of the Covid epidemic (more than 50,000 people completed online questionnaires in 11 countries). Researchers have found that epidemic measures have increased the proportion of those who drink “a little more.” Those who belong to this group of negative consequences caused by alcohol consumption mainly perceived a deterioration in their physical and mental condition, but they also had an adverse effect on their work performance. Overall, therefore, the negative consequences of alcohol increased.

The dry November challenge is not a field for uncontrolled drinkers

According to Ferenc Dávid, the target group of the challenge is the consumer in the range between one or two units of drink a week and a bottle of wine a day. The point is control, because this cannot be relearned, so it is important to confirm it while you have it. The challenge is for those who want to drink and drink, they just don’t want to lose control. If someone wants to come down with 2-3 bottles of wine a day, or an equally large amount of concentrate, don’t try it alone, it requires hospital care, underline.

Dealing with the viral situation and the alcohol is related to the challenge of sobriety of a month. On the one hand physically, because dry people do not go to pubs or discos to drink, and on the other hand, mentally, because active participation in the challenge also increases the sense of responsibility and self-care of the individual.

Good advice

For those who make a pledge for the first time this year not to drink alcohol in November, a Blue Point employee recommends getting outside as much as possible, avoiding clubs and pubs.

They drink plenty of clean water, but they can also quell their cravings with 0% non-alcoholic beer.
