Table of Contents – Abroad – Istanbul in Vienna: Video Election Report of a Multicultural District of Vienna

[ad_1]

Favoriten is one of the most diverse districts in Vienna, home to many Turks, Kurds, and other nationalities. As a result, it plays a central role in political campaigns leading up to today’s elections.

Locals mostly favor the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), which also supports immigrants, but the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), which uses anti-immigration rhetoric as an example of rampant crime and failed integration, also has a following.

Index’s Vienna report staff didn’t feel threatened at all, we could address anyone, at most they didn’t make a statement to us. The area has been described by local youth as peaceful, but it has been recognized that it can sometimes be “suspicious”, making people feel less safe at night. Some said the neighborhood was “Islamized”, with the Turks living in a world separate from the majority. Others say that while there is a cultural conflict, the problem is actually socio-economic in nature – many are disappointed, especially in the wake of rising unemployment due to the coronavirus epidemic.

We didn’t get a devastating picture of the situation, but it made us feel like we were falling into an ethnically diverse and urgent city in the Middle East or Asia Minor. However, we do not feel them looking out. It is true that we do not shoot in the afternoon or throughout the district, and presumably we do not spend much more time in Favoriten than János Lázár a few years ago.

The Turkish pastry is GREAT for Austrian butchers, as is the knife throwing pub for Chinese fast food and people of immigrant origin for FPÖ campaign events.

Now comes the video report, with a special screw at the end. Worth a look.

This is a field report from Istanbul from Vienna’s multicultural district
