It is not good to collect European signatures from the Szekler National Council so that indigenous national minorities in EU member states can independently apply for EU funding, leaving governments aside. One million signatures must be collected, but so far the number of signatories can only be around six hundred thousand, and the deadline is May 7, so there is only one week left.
The Szeklers initiated the action because they believe that in some countries governments do not direct enough EU development funds to minority-inhabited regions, discriminating these areas. The initiative is obviously not part of the fight for Szeklerland’s autonomy either.
It was first presented in 2013 by a 12-member civil committee to the Szekler National Council.
Cohesion policy for equality between regions and the sustainability of regional cultures ”before the European Commission, but was rejected for the first time by the committee. Years of litigation followed, and the National Council finally won last spring. A year ago, in May, the collection of signatures began, but the required number of one million signatories had not yet been reached.
The online petition was signed by just 350,000 people, most of the supporters are from Hungary, and there may be around 210,000 paper signatures. The mobilization has been relatively successful in Maygarland, Romania, and Slovakia, but activity is low in other countries with significant national minority regions, such as Sweden, Belgium, and Spain.
In the remaining days, documentary filmmaker László Pesty, former campaign manager for István Tarlós, took over the firm’s collection campaign and tries to control his hair. On Thursday, Pesty told the Hungarian nation that the limit should be reached in seven countries, in addition to the total number of one million signatures, in addition to Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, they will focus on five countries, mainly with smaller firms, such as Croatia and Slovenia.
Meanwhile, the international equivalent of Hungarian website Írdalá.hu, Iamsigning.com, has been launched, and they are trying to push this through with online campaigns. The traditional collection of paper signatures has been made completely impossible by the coronavirus epidemic. Pesty also told the newspaper that they did not yet know whether Brussels would grant permission to extend the deadline due to the epidemic. EU Commissioner Vera Jourová has not responded to her request for weeks.
