In October, the debt of Hungarian hospitals operating as a budgeting institution decreased by HUF 710 million, which amounts to HUF 40.8 billion according to the latest data from the Hungarian State Treasury.
At the end of October, health institutions accounted for 40.8 billion HUF from the budgetary bodies belonging to the central subsystem of public administrations, which represents a decrease of 710 million HUF compared to the previous month.
The Hungarian State Treasury (MÁK) released unexpected figures on the evolution of the debt stock, which increased by an average of 4-5 billion per month this year (which, according to recent data, fell to an average of 4 billion per month), after September growth “only” It was half a billion guilders, one tenth of the usual amount, but in October we managed to overcome this miracle with less than 710 million guilders.
Detailed data shows that large hospitals, universities, national institutions and county hospitals, which are regularly at the top of the debt list, this time gathered an increase of almost 3 billion in a month, which was offset by debt reductions of hundreds of millions for a county hospital and ten million for many city hospitals. .
They could be afraid of layoffs
According to their sources on hospital conditions, the change in the trend of indebtedness may be due to the change of direction, and due to concerns about the failure of the management and the reduction of the risk of this move, those who have been able to save so far have started to pay more.
The phenomenon shows, on the one hand, that there may indeed be a reserve of hundreds of millions in the system, and on the other hand it continues to indicate funding gaps: 865 million in the Military Hospital, 360 million in the University of Debrecen, 316 million in GOKI, 327 million in Péterfy and hundreds of millions. Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and Békés county hospital also increased their debt.
The stagnation in September and the setback in October are not the solution to the financing problems, it is seen that there will always be institutions that will definitely generate debt. Simply because the system is distorted, disproportionate, and incomplete.
In any case, the money set aside may have been used up by the end of October (our funds do not consider another month less conceivable) and providers still lack those HUF 40 billion. If debt reduction, more efficient management, it may be necessary to change people here and there, which will be decided by the hospital director, but right in the middle of a covid epidemic, such a change would lead to chaos, experts say.
In addition to its extreme, this year pointed out the failures in the financing of the care system and the deficiencies of the debt settlements so far, László Rásky, general secretary of the Association of Medical Technology, which represents a significant part of the providers, emphasized the issue of our work. In his opinion, more serious corrective interventions should be initiated with the government by settling debts with suppliers by the end of the year, in line with past practice.
