In the case of “Hungary is no longer a democracy”, only the writings related to the epidemic were of greatest interest to readers in 2020.

Coronavirus: the second wave, the second closure

Later than expected by many, but in mid-November, the Hungarian government also decided to try to curb the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic by introducing restrictions. At the time of the decision, 5,000 new infections had been identified per day and the number of deaths from the virus mostly ranged from 50 to 100 in 24 hours. The first step is a partial closure, but how effective it is is questionable. Follow our news!

We collect the 20 articles with the most clicks of Politician, one of the most popular political news sites in the world. Unsurprisingly, articles on the coronavirus epidemic were the most widely read, with 15 of the top 20 materials related to it.

Of the remaining five, a story about Hungary, an overview of Freedom House’s report on democracy, was of most interest to readers. Overall, Hungary is no longer a democracy: the report was the sixth most read page on the site in 2020.

As hvg.hu wrote, according to Freedom House, in 2019 Hungary went from so-called semi-solid democracies to hybrid regimes. The organization defines them as systems in which elections are held, but democratic institutions are fragile and pose fundamental challenges to political and civil liberties.

The remaining four writings, which were not about the epidemic but were read by many, were as follows:

  • Merkel declined Trump’s invitation to the G7 summit (ninth place)
  • Britons receive a residence card in the EU (15th place)
  • Brexit: we explain what happened (in September) and what to expect (16th place)
  • Nine things to know about Anthony Blinken, the future US Secretary of State (Position 17)

The number of independent power editorial boards is steadily declining, and those that still exist are trying to stay afloat in a growing headwind. At HVG we persevere, we do not give in to pressure and we bring national and international news every day.

That is why we ask you, our readers, to stand by us, support us, join our membership and renew it!

And we promise to keep doing our best for you in all circumstances!

It has been said again in the European Parliament that the suspected cases will be investigated from 1 January. Parliament’s resolution drew attention to the fact that the provisions can be applied even if fundamental rights are “systematically violated and have – or may have – an impact on the management of EU funds”.
