Hungary’s record champion was defeated by French PSG in the bronze match.

Telekom Veszprém was eliminated from the Paris Saint-Germain team 31-26 in the bronze match of the men’s handball champions league, which was postponed on Tuesday of the previous season in Cologne.

Rasmus Lauge Schmidt, Manuel Strlek, Patrik Ligetvári and Márton Székely were absent from Veszprém, and Nikola Karabatic, Henrik Toft Hansen and Luc Steins were absent from the French team.

The Hungarian team had to play the bronze medal match less than twenty hours after the semi-final lost to German THW Kiel in extra time. At first this was not seen at all in their game, as they started 3-0 and then the goals were taken alternately, but in the jump, PSG backed down with a series of five goals. Veszprém’s team was also unsuccessful with their opponent’s extremely effective open defense after that, so they were already 14-11 behind at the break.

With the clock at minute 50, David Davis’s coach decided it was time to make a change to turn the game around. Veszprém remained under the control of Máté Lékai, but PSG had a quick response to almost all the goals scored, and then went 26-21 with a 4-1 series. Despite the valiant defenses of Vladimir Cupara, the Hungarian gang was unable to catch up with them either, so they ultimately had to reach fourth place.

The most successful player on the field was Máté Lékai with nine goals, the other side hit Elohim Prandi and Nedim Remili six times.

The French band won a bronze medal in BL for the third time after 2016 and 2018. Veszprém played for the third time in third place in Cologne, in 2014 he was eliminated by Barcelona, whom he defeated in 2017.
