The Austrian tennis player defeated the German Zverev in a five-set match.

Dominic Thiem of Austria won the men’s singles at the US Open Tennis Championships after beating German Alexander Zverev by a double disadvantage in Sunday’s final.

Before the final it was decided that, for the first time since 2014, a 27-year-old Thiem or 23-year-old Zverev would inaugurate a new Grand Slam champion in New York.

The second-placed Austrian reached his fourth GS final, having twice beaten Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in the past, and in January world leader Novak Djokovic proved better than him at the Australian Open. With another failed final, he could have been the third male player after Ivan Lendl and Andy Murray in the open era (since 1968) to lose his first four GS finals.

The Russian-born Zverev made the top four at the Grand Slam in Melbourne this year, where Thiem had just stopped him.

The unexpected end of the 140th US Open was also indicated by the two statistics that the last 13 GS were won by Nadal, Djokovic or Federer, who triumphed 56 times out of the last 67 highlights.

Looking at the scales of the two finalists against each other, Thiem led 7/2 in the duel between the two, in addition to winning all three times in the GS tournament.

His tenth battle, which took place at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which was empty due to the coronavirus epidemic, started with surprise with the superiority of the 198-centimeter Zverev, who bravely climbed to the net, served well and took the serve from his opponent in 2: 1, who started very nervous. The Viennese tennis player was also on the defensive in the jump, running meters behind the baseline in search of the balls and hardly daring to “let go” of his hand.

Hamburg-born Zverev swept the first game in half an hour and soon gained a break advantage in the second as well. Thiem still couldn’t find his game, and at 5: 1, when he was already at twenty fouls, he had to pass set balls as a service. Zverev failed to outsource the game at 5: 2, badly ruined a light flight with a fixed ball, Thiem broke, so he was soon 5: 4 on the scoreboard. At that point, however, the German was no longer shaking, and after 80 minutes he was also confidently bringing the second game.

In the third act, Zverev was soon in the lead again, but Thiem, increasingly confident, first took his serve during the game, then repeated it in 5: 4 and embellished it. The fourth set could come, head-to-head, until Zverev hit a weak organ boom at 3: 5, making his opponent equal.

The Austrian held on to the momentum, immediately breaking in the last game, but the German, who was gaining steam again, held on, so the fight was reopened. Thiem lost his serve in 3: 4, but the visibly nervous Zverev was unable to subcontract the match in 5: 3. Hoping for this, the Austrians also had a chance in 6: 5, but he was unsuccessful either, and then in the shortening that closed the final, a hair from Thiem was better.

The twisted and poor quality finish lasted 4 hours 3 minutes.

Thiem, who is the second Austrian GS champion after Thomas Muster’s victory at Roland Garros in 1995, received $ 3 million in addition to his 17th career tournament win.

Since the beginning of the open era in 1968, Thiem has been the first to reverse a 0-2 US Open final.
