A Slovenian woman has been found guilty of insurance fraud. According to the court ruling, she intentionally cut off her hand to get the insurance money.
A court in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, determined that Julija Adlesic, 22, also had five insurance policies the year before her hand injury. The woman claimed the accident occurred while cutting a branch.
Adlesic reportedly received more than € 1 million (approximately HUF 357 million) from insurers. So, on the other hand, he has two years in prison while his friend has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Adlesic and several family members were arrested in 2019 when he arrived at the hospital with his hands severed above the wrist. The court found that they did not intentionally bring the severed hand with them in order for the disability to be considered permanent for the sake of a higher sum insured. However, authorities found the severed palm on the woman’s property in time.
Prosecutors found conclusive evidence that the woman’s friend searched the internet for him to use the artificial hand in the days before the accident.
The father of Adlesic’s friend also received a one-year suspended prison sentence.
A video of the arrival of the three defendants to court was also recorded.
At trial, Adlesic denied deliberately cutting off his hand.
If the fraud had been successful, the woman would have received more than half a million euros and the rest would have been paid in monthly installments.
