South Korean Lieutenant General Ahn Jungho reported that the victim was an official from the South Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. It was unclear exactly who died and what position he worked, or that he ended up alone in a boat on the seawall that separates the two Koreas.

The incident took place around Jeonpjeong Island on September 21, a trace of the South Korean citizen lost 1.9 kilometers from the island. Some time after losing contact with him, the official found himself in North Korean waters, where Kim Jongun’s soldiers shot him dead and then burned his remains.

In a statement, South Korea condemned the atrocities of its northern neighbor and called on the country’s leaders to punish the soldiers involved in the incident. They added that they will be responsible for their atrocities against all South Koreans.

The last time North Korea killed South Korean citizens was in 2010: 46 sailors, two Marines, and two civilians were killed in two separate incidents that year.
