Russia’s Foreign Ministry drew attention on Saturday, in response to “hostile statements” from Western countries, that several Western countries and NATO laboratories had dealt with Novicok-type neurotoxins, which German doctors say were poisoned. by Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.
According to Russian news agency Ria Novostyi, Moscow’s Foreign Ministry responded that in a joint resolution by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Friday he was deeply shocked by the attack on Navalny, which they say is a grave violation of democracy and pluralism.
“We must remember the following in connection with the indisputable accusations that neurotoxic toxic chemical compounds called Novics were developed in our country in the West. For many years, experts from many Western countries and specialized NATO structures have worked with compounds belonging to this broad chemical group. – reports the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. It also notes that more than fifty official patents have been issued in the United States for combat deployment technologies for the neurotoxin in question.
Alexei Navalny is one of the best known critics of President Vladimir Putin. On August 20, after arguing with the opposition and filming an anti-corruption video in Siberia, he fell ill and fell into a coma on the Tomsk-Moscow flight. The plane made an emergency medical landing in Omsk, where Navalny was treated by locals and sent specialists from Moscow to the scene, and then transported to Berlin on August 22 at the request of his relatives. His followers claimed that the politician was poisoned, which Russian experts repeatedly rejected.
Based on samples taken from the Navalny organization, chemical weapons experts from the German Army demonstrated that the opposition politician was poisoned with one of the Novicok-type combat neurotoxin varieties developed in the former Soviet Union.
Based on the results of the investigation, the German government said on Wednesday that Navalny was the victim of a toxic attack in his homeland. Berlin has started consultations with its EU and NATO partners on appropriate responses. Moscow, for its part, objected that the German side did not provide information on its findings at the request of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office or the doctors treating Navalny.
In his explanation to the foreign affairs statement, Ria Novostyi draws attention to the fact that the “last kilogram” of combat toxic substances stored in Russia was destroyed on September 17, 2017. With this, Russia completed the federal program from 1996 ahead of schedule, it fully met its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and disposed of some 40,000 tons of toxic substances. At the same time, the news agency adds, the United States is currently the only country that possesses significant amounts of toxic combat material.
