Hakan Calhanoglu could prepare for his 150th Milan championship, with Milan regaining first place in the league table, but to his surprise against Benevento, who ran in 10th place. And the spice of the meeting was definitely given by the person of the host’s coach: Filippo Inzaghi, who scored 72 goals in 200 championships as a Milan player and also won the Champions League.
But the 47-year-old head coach also didn’t come up with a trick that would have stopped Milan tonight. And not only him, but Fabrizio Pasqua, who led the meeting.
A penalty was called in the 15th minute, and Milan’s Alessandro Tuia seized his opportunity to put his team ahead of another goal. Frank Kessie and also sold, gaining the lead for the visiting team (0-1). Until minute 34, the name of the spori could be blessed in Milan, but then the magic was broken. Sandro Tonali’s Pasqua was sent off for kicking the ball after the whistle, a play completely offside, earning him his second yellow card of the game. Then shortly after, showing the video judge’s signal, the referee called the monitor, looked back at the case, and changed his earlier decision to a red card.
Although Benevento took a slight lead after this, he was unable to score a goal. Regardless, his biggest chance for that was in the minutes leading up to the show, Roberto Insigne even fired in the 20th minute.
Almost immediately after the break, Milan scored the second goal: Rafael Leao raised over Lorenzo Montipo in the upper left (0-2).
From here, Milan was clearly prepared to defend and counterattack, and time worked. The visitors could have scored the tying goal after Gianluca Caprari entered the middle, but his shot went wide. Benevento tried almost twice as much (15) as the visiting guard (8) in 90 minutes, but still failed to score the goal.
Stefano Pioli’s team won and again took the lead in the table, one point, ahead of city rival Inter.
