George Russell and Valtteri Bottas headed to a double win when Jack Aitken’s accident left debris on the track at the exit of the last corner, prompting the safety car to enter. Both Mercedes drivers came to the box for new tires, essentially new at this point.
Russell had a normal wheel change and even came out of the box and into his place Bottas but while working on his car the mechanics realized that Russell had tires on the front axle so they dropped the replacement and sent to Bottas back to the hard ones used until then.
Russellen was already Bottas’ first tire at the time, so he was told that he had to stand up again to correct the mistake before he could continue racing. Then he also had a flaw, he finally finished ninth, but the FIA has launched an investigation into the matter.
The alliance shared the following announcement: “When George Russell stood out at 9:16 pm local time, the wheels of the Valtteri Bottas were placed on its front axle. Russell returned to the box after a lap to put on his assigned wheels. As this also violates Sections 24.2 / a and 24.3 / e of the Competition Rules, the case was referred to the judges ”.
