At a press conference on Monday night, the prime minister said that the center-right cabinet he led broke with the consumption-based economic model of the previous Social Democratic governments, which wanted to boost the economic recovery of investment. To this end, it is planned to spend primarily 6% of GDP on infrastructure development in the next two years.
Orban recalled that at the time of the state of emergency, which expires on May 14, the budget will cover assistance to a million workers sent on forced leave. This form of support will be replaced by another: the Bucharest government plans to bear 35 to 41.5 percent of the salary costs of employees returning to their jobs, that is, the tax and contribution burden on wages. The Romanian Prime Minister has promised that a special state support program will be launched to encourage the employment of unemployed people over fifty and young people starting their careers.
According to Ludovic Orban, his government has managed to stop the spread of the epidemic through timely preventive measures. He noted that since February 23, 1,279,000 Romanian citizens have returned to their homes from abroad, most of them from the most infected European countries, representing a high risk of infection. Hundreds of thousands of Romanian citizens who returned from abroad were sent to home isolation or official quarantine: the prime minister said that not many countries had the “courage” to take such strict precautions.
When the first coronavirus infection appeared in Romania in late February, only a few cases were known in Spain and France. Today, 800 deaths are on the list of losses in Romania, compared to 25,000 in the aforementioned western European countries, the Romanian head of government exemplified the effectiveness of the precautionary measures.
