Riots broke out in Philadelphia on Tuesday after police shot dead an African-American man waving a knife Monday afternoon, the MTI writes.

Philadelphia police said 27-year-old Walter Wallace did not listen to the police call and did not drop the knife in his hand. Then the police shot him dead. The police action was recorded on the mobile phone of one of the passersby present and was therefore also published on social media platforms.

The father of the man who was shot dead told the Philadelphia Inquirer that his son may have been hit by ten shots. “Why didn’t the cops use an electric shock first?” I ask. He explained that Walter Wallace was battling a mental illness and was taking medication regularly.

A police spokesman said police had been called to the western district of the city with a report that a man was threatening with a weapon.
The police officers who arrived repeatedly called Walter Wallace, who threatened him with a knife, and when he approached the police, they shot him.

A video posted on social media shows two people trying to get a better look at Wallace, but to no avail. One of them, the victim’s mother, threw the police after the shooting.

On Tuesday, protesters gathered in a park near the event and chanted, “Black lives matter.” The protesters set fire to police cars and garbage cans and attacked the departing police with stones. About thirty policemen were injured.

Jim Kenney, the city’s Democratic mayor, announced that he will convene a meeting with the police chief to discuss the incident and its aftermath.

The city police chief announced Tuesday afternoon that 91 people have been arrested in connection with the riots, the vast majority of them for robbery and theft, while 11 suspects have been arrested for assaulting police officers.
