In general, children infected with the coronavirus are believed to be virtually asymptomatic. Researchers have now discovered that it can cause severe inflammation in their bodies.
Researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center have found that while children are often nearly asymptomatic, inflammation in their circulatory system can have a long-term effect, Euronews reports.
Children under the age of 12 are considered practically immune to Covid-19 disease in most countries and are therefore not classified as at risk. They are just trying to protect children who are also fighting some other disease.
However, according to a study in the Lancet medical journal, some of the infected children showed signs and symptoms of multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), although they did not show any symptoms of coronavirus disease.
The lead author of the study, Álvaro Moreira, warns that this phenomenon is dangerous precisely because an infected child does not show signs of the disease, but can develop a more severe degree of MIS-C in a few weeks.
According to the neurologist, this is scary because it can even be fatal, since the inflammation affects multiple organs at the same time. Very often, the lungs and the heart, but also the digestive and nervous systems can become inflamed as a result of the disease – read the article.
