Russian President Vladimir Putin said it would be a suicidal move for the Armenian government to try to withdraw from the Nagorno-Karabakh peace accord. In Yerevan, opposition forces began protesting the November 10 agreement and demanded the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pasinyan.
Under the agreement disputed by the opposition, Yerevan must return several of the occupied regions to Azerbaijan, with the exception of the corridor connecting Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian troops withdrawing from disputed Nagorno-Karabakh will be replaced by Russian peacekeepers along the demarcation line and corridor.
Putin gave an interview to Russian state television on Tuesday, where he was asked what would happen if a new Armenian government comes to power and tries to withdraw from the deal. According to the Russian president, this would be a big mistake.
Pasinján has no plans to resign over military defeat, but he has overthrown his chancellor and is also preparing for a government shakeup.
