Gergely Prőhle, former director of the Petőfi Literary Museum, evaluated the case of his successor, Szilárd Demeter, on the ATV: if Demeter really retires from writing public articles, it is better to stay in his post, “as if another toto started running. director of the Petőfi Literary Museum ”.
According to Prőhle, even when Demeter was appointed, only more radical candidates were considered, compared to whom it was also a more moderate option.
The director published an opinion piece on Origó last Saturday, in which he wrote, among other things, the György Soros gas chamber in Europe. Thousands protested the article, Demeter’s own staff distanced themselves, and Mazsihis, the Israeli and US embassies also found it unacceptable.
Demeter withdrew the article and announced that he would stop writing public articles. The government said he would not be replaced despite the lawsuits, but that he was no longer allowed to appear on any vitamin shows.
According to Prőhle, what Demeter wrote may have a place in the work of a blogger, but it does not fit in with the CEO of a national institution. He thinks someone likes a thought, but in such cases, “if you’re lucky, you can first show it to, say, your wife, who may say it shouldn’t be published.” Demeter, on the other hand, according to Prőhle, showed it only to his most radical friends, who might tell him yes, buddy, it’s huge, turn it off immediately.
The former director had previously said he was fired to reassure far-right voters about the move; now he said that recent events also show that he was right about that.
