The sad news was communicated by the hospital that treats Quintana to Porto on Friday at noon.
“The message that we never wanted to share: our dear Alfredo Quintana left us here. We will always remember you as one of us. A real dragon. Rest in peace” – With these heartbreaking lines, Porto shared the news on the community page.
Quintana suffered a heart attack during a training session in Porto on Monday and was transferred to St. John Hospital in Porto after his condition stabilized. RTP Sport wrote on Wednesday that the goalkeeper of the Portuguese national team is in the intensive care unit and doctors are keeping him in an artificial coma.
Primeira Hora added this Thursday that the worst was already feared in Portugal, so they arranged for Quintana’s mother to travel with her son. The newspaper had already written at this time that the goalkeeper was without oxygen for at least 50 minutes, so he was in a state of brain death. However, the information that came to light was not confirmed by the hospital treating the player. The Cuban federation has already expressed its condolences to the family, although it later modified the statement issued.
Porto reportedly played at home against Meskov Brest of Belarus on Wednesday in the group stage of the Champions League, postponing the match after what happened. According to a statement on the Brest website, the Portuguese team will no longer play any of BL’s remaining three matches.
Quintana, who would have turned 33 on March 20, was born in Havana. He was certified for Porto in 2011, where he became a key player in the team over the years. He was a six-time champion with the club (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019), and in 2019 he also won the Portuguese Cup and the Super Cup (the latter also won trophies in 2010 and 2014). The 201cm tall goalkeeper joined the Portuguese national team in 2014, where he played 67 games and scored 10 goals.
In Euro 2020 he started at the doors of the Portuguese, who finally finished in sixth place in the last semifinal against ours, one of the best of his team in the match won 34-26. Quintana, who left behind a two-year-old girl, was also a member of the 10th national team at the World Championships in Egypt this January.
