Pharmaceutical maker Pfizer said Wednesday that its coronavirus vaccine is 95 percent effective and has no serious side effects.

Last week, the company had already predicted that the vaccine would work more than 90 percent efficiently based on the partial results, but the first full data set for the experiment has now been described.

The data shows that the vaccine prevented both mild and severe forms of Covid-19 and is 94 percent effective in older adults, who may be at higher risk of complications from the virus.

Almost 44,000 volunteers participated in a joint study by Pfizer and BioNTech. half of whom received the actual vaccine, the rest received a placebo. Of the 170 coronavirus-infected subjects, 162 were in the placebo group and only eight were vaccinated with the true vaccine. Nine out of ten severe cases received placebo.

According to Pfizer and BioNTech, the efficacy of vaccination was consistent across all age groups and ethnicities. The most common side effect was fatigue, and 3.7 percent of the volunteers complained of this after the second dose. Older adults reported fewer and milder side effects, according to the companies.

Akiko Iwasaki, a Yale University immunologist, according to The New York Times, finds the results for those 65 and older particularly promising: He said.

Pfizer plans to monitor participants for an additional two years to ensure the duration and long-term security of the protection.

The companies plan to apply for emergency approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a few days so that the vaccine is available as soon as possible. Recently, the pharmaceutical manufacturer Moderna also reported that, based on an initial analysis of the results, the vaccine they developed was 94.5 percent effective and the Russian Sputnik-V was 92 percent effective, according to partial results reported by Russian authorities. .
