Particular rain fell on Hungary 24.hu

Thursday’s weather produced quite interesting phenomena due to the simple fact that at surface pressure the water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius, changing from a liquid to a solid state. In Hungary, the day started with negative points, but at least values close to freezing, and the rain danced between the two states.

In the western part of Transdanubia, in some parts of Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas, Zala and Somogy and Veszprém counties, the tin rain falls persistently, which only ended at the end of the morning and at noon. And not everywhere. For the three westernmost counties, there was a second-degree orange warning in the morning due to light rain, while elsewhere except the easternmost part of the country there was a first-level warning – you can find out the current situation here .

In this case, the air temperature is in the positive range at high altitude, but the surface temperature is below zero degrees. Precipitation hits the ground as rain and immediately freezes to the ground, landmarks

– explains to 24.hu László Molnár meteorologist, a Kiderül.hu coworker. The longer this difference persists, the thicker the ice armor will cover the landscape.

Freezing rain and hail

However, many may have noticed that as if smaller pebbles were falling from the sky, smaller chunks of ice fell. Hail, you might think, although it’s not that, it’s freezing rain, the difference is big. In this case, the temperature of the air near the surface is below 0 degrees, above it a lighter layer of air extends, and then even higher, from where the cloud layer that gives the precipitation extends , the frost reigns supreme.

Freezing rain starts out as a snowflake, melts “on the go” and turns into a raindrop, then freezes into a small block of ice before hitting the ground.

It is a typical winter phenomenon, in contrast to the much more dynamic hail that occurs exclusively during warm seasons. In this case, the precipitation particles leave a cluster in obedience to gravity, but the upward flow of the heated ground “pushes them back”: as if the wind were blowing from the ground into the cloud.

The drops circulate up and down in the cloud, while the water freezes on them in more and more layers, if we were to cut a piece of ice like that, we would see a shell structure. All of this continues until they gain enough weight to be overcome by the gravitational force acting on them.

The expert points out that the speed of the upward flow can reach 70-80 m / sec, the largest pieces can be made up of 30-40 “shells”, they can fall between us like blocks of ice with a diameter of 10-15 centimeters.

Warming is coming

So tomorrow a significant change will start, and for the weekend we will have very light weather with lots of rain.

According to the Kiderül.hu forecast, longer or shorter periods of the day may be mainly in the Trans-Tisza region, elsewhere the sky will be more or less cloudy, at dawn fog patches may form mainly in the west and southwest. Until noon, there will be sporadic rains, mostly frost in the western and central parts of the country, at dawn, in some places even in the morning, small rains, but from the afternoon it is unlikely that it will rain much.

The south and southeast wind is increasing in several places, and in Kisalföld and the Southern Great Plain it is occasionally strengthening. The lowest night temperature is -2 to +4, the highest daytime temperature is usually between 3 and 8 degrees, but in the southeast they can sometimes measure 9, 11 degrees.
