Olympic and world champion Zlatko Sa has died at 59

According to a unanimous report in the Croatian sports press, Zlatko Saracevic, Olympic player and world handball champion and head coach of the Podravka Koprivnica women’s handball team, passed away at the age of 59.

Croatian Vanguard League reportedly Sunday night Zlatko Saracevic his team, Podravka Koprivnica, defeated Lokomotiva Zagreb 32-29, after which the coach transported the team’s goalkeeper, Barbara Stancin, home, but got upset at a traffic light. The arriving ambulances tried to resuscitate for 40 minutes but were unsuccessful, the specialist died at 59 years of age. According to press reports, a heart attack may have caused his death.

Between 2000 and 2002, Saracevic was also a player for Veszprém (he won two championships with the Hungarian national team and a Hungarian Cup, in addition to a silver medal in the Champions League and the EHF Cup), he won a gold medal in the championship World Cup with Selection of Yugoslavia in 1986 and a selection of Croatia. He won the 1996 Olympics. As a coach, he worked as an assistant to the Croatian men’s team and later as the head coach of the PPD Zagreb men’s team. He took over the leadership of the Kapronca women’s band in 2018, and with the team he also won a championship title and a cup.

Born in 1961, Saracevic wore the shirt of the Bosnian national team, as well as the teams of Yugoslavia and Croatia during his playing career. As a legionnaire, in addition to Hungary, he also played in France.
