The German government said tests on the Russian opposition leader revealed the presence of the infamous Soviet-era neurotoxin in his body.
Navalny was transported from Omsk, Siberia, to the Charité Hospital in Berlin with severe symptoms of poisoning after being ill on a plane bound for Moscow. A Berlin hospital reported on Friday that his condition has improved a lot, now it has stabilized, but it cannot be ruled out for the moment that the poison that has entered his body has lasting effects.
A spokeswoman for Angela Merkel said Wednesday that they had found evidence of the presence of a substance belonging to the Novics group in Navalny’s body. With this neurotoxin, the other enemy of the Kremlin, Sergei Scriptal, was poisoned two years ago, after which 150 Russian diplomats from 28 countries were expelled worldwide, and Putin allegedly ordered the closure of the Novicok laboratory.
A German government spokesman said they will inform their partners in the EU and NATO and seek a common response to the situation. Navalny’s allies said authorities had poisoned him, which the Kremlin denies. From the beginning, the Omsk doctors were of the opinion that Navalny was certainly not poisoned, said his German colleagues, they investigated this. (AP)
